Sunday Morning and lots of rain!

I'm done playing in the water. Got distracted and ended up weeding in the flowerbed a bit too. Sure is easier to pull weeds when the ground is so soft.

I took these pictures when I first went out this morning. It had just stopped raining.

This was the front yard drainage problem I wanted to deal with. It's only a 5' area that I had to trench a bit.

Once it's drier, I'll till it and re-contour it a bit. Still, that much rain at one time is not a major problem out here.

How much rain? Friday Hubby emptied 9/10th out of the gage, this just from over night (oh, it's raining again already).

Might be more rain than we have gotten the rest of the growing season.

Here is the back yard, this drains pretty well on its own.

Though Angel sure enjoys it!

Auction Update

We spent too much money - but sometimes it works out that way. I did spend too much on a set of 6 plates that will be just perfect for over the dining room window. I bid once OVER my max, and did get them. But I try real hard to stick with my limits. Just got sort of miffed because some dealer was there buying all the collector plates so the only one who got any deals was her.

Still, paid less than on EBay when you figured in the cost of shipping.

Hubby got a never used bosch saber saw. We've needed one of those (yes, there are still a few tools we haven't got).

But the real find was my dining room table and 6 chairs. Almost didn't get it because they were selling it as a set with a buffet and a hutch. I didn't want them, and have no room for them any way. Got outbid, but when I talked to the lady with the high bid, turns out she had no use for the table/chairs, so we split the cost and each got what we wanted for way less than what we had expected to pay. So I got a nice cherry table with drop ends and one leaf, 5 side chairs and one captain’s chair for $175. I will be refinishing the set and reupholstering the chairs (don't worry; it's NOT antique so I'm not "ruining" anything).

Our dining room is small, and we had not been able to find a new table that was small enough to fit. This one, when folded is 38x27, but opens up to 38x68. It is perfect (or will be once refinished) and I got it for $150 less than I had bid.

I was ticked when they announced they would sell it as a set, and I bet they got less for the pieces than they would have if they had sold them separately. My gain - their loss!

They had several guns for sale. Too bad the owner didn't really like his guns, most looked like they had been in a closet for the last 12 years, and hadn't been cleaned or oiled for even longer before that. It's such a shame to see nice older guns rust pitted from neglect.

Oh, I still have not painted the ceiling yet.

Saturday Morning

I'd better make this quick, as I'm suppose to be painting a ceiling.

Hubby got the sheetrock done and the walls primed. I agreed he could prime, but I'm not up to letting him deal with real wall paint yet.

We are going to try something different in the den. Figured if we painted the ceiling, it would be easier to maintain with having the wood stove in that room. Gonna try a 3/4" nap roller and see if we get a non-smooth finish. Yesterday at Home Depot I was asking an "associate" about using a longer nap roller to get a more uneven surface. I told her about the difference I get between using a 1/4" and a 3/8" roller, and wondered if I longer nap roller would give an even rougher surface.

She looked me straight in the eye and told me the nap of the roller would not have any affect on the smoothness of the finished surface. Um, sorry, I guess I was wrong about the significant difference I've already noticed using different nap rollers.

There is a good possibility this Associate has never painted anything other than her nails - but she's the expert.

So I bought several rollers, and I'll be experimenting. Worse case hubby sprays it and then I paint it (He won’t not use any texture in the mix). We were hoping for something not quite that rough, but more than I get using a 3/8" roller.

The ceiling will be an off white, with a hint of sage green. Already picked out wall paper. Looks like paneling painted sort of the same off white color that the paint is starting to peal off. Hubby said it looks more like birch bark.

Had really wanted to use real paneling. Hubby forgot and put all the outlets at the level for sheetrock instead of making the stick out farther. Now I am sure people decide to put paneling where it has never been before, and they deal with the outlet issue. I'd expect they just shim the outlets out, and don't worry about it.

I think he secretly didn't want paneling, and when I mentioned it, he flatly told me we couldn't do it now. He acted quite contrite LOL!!

Not a big deal, the wallpaper is lots cheaper and I do the installation. I like wallpaper!

Ok, I'm procrastinating! Hubby wants to go to an auction today, and I may not have time to do the ceiling now (hehehehe!). Yea, I'll have to do it later, but maybe by then I'll be more awake.

August 6, 2006

Recently hubby and I were talking about our progress. We figure about another year on the house. Then we'll start on something else. That is the problem when you have enough land to fit a few extra buildings or livestock on.

I figure maybe after we've been done on the house for a year, I can start working on my husband about the attached garage. He does not mind new construction, but sure does hate the gutting and dealing with rooms where nothing is quite square or level. Just makes for a bit more thinking before cutting. It's that "thinking" part that throws him off.

He does excellent work, but sometimes misses things cause he didn't think about it first. He installed a door yesterday. We had already installed the subfloor, so I figured we would need to cut some off the bottom of the door frame so the bottom of the door would just clear the carpet. I was resting, so he got the idea he would install the door without my help. Did a wonderful job, door is level and plumb, and looks real nice. Except for the 1" gap between the bottom of the door and the carpet.

He said he didn't think about that - since usually we have to worry about raising the door, never cutting some off. But usually we install the door BEFORE the flooring, not afterwards.

Oh well, not a big deal, but I know it will annoy me when I am watching TV and light is coming in from under that door - I know, I'll just have to NOT watch TV LOL!!

Actually, if it does bother me, I'll put a sweep on the back side of the door and that will take care of the problem. And I guess it is better than having doors that barely open because the builder didn't allow enough room for the height of carpet and padding.

Here are pictures of the reloading room with the sheetrock up but before hubby installed the door

While hubby was nailing down the subfloor, he hit another nail with this nail, and it curled it right around. He had to dig it out of the flooring.

And this is the “underside” – the stairwell to the basement.

August 5th, 2006

I've been playing with my design software again (sort of forgot about it until someone reminded me yesterday LOL!)

Here is what I ultimately want to end up with.

When we did the addition, we decided that doing the garage at the same time would be a bit more than we wanted to tackle. We've gone back and forth as to if we really wanted an attached garage, but I know as we get older, we'll want one more and more.

Since my hubby already has his shop, the garage wouldn't be real big, and would be for vehicle parking only. (yea, right . . .)

Oh, it's fun to dream.

This is what it really looks like right now.

At least we won't have to remove any trees to build the garage.

BTW, I did get the sofit up and hubby got the door installed. Guess that means we can take the rest of the weekend off.
